The Problem Today
Underrepresentation
Black stories and perspectives are underrepresented in traditional news and media. On average, only 7 percent of mainstream newsroom employees are black.
Underpaid
Black journalists and reports are systematically underpaid for their contributions, earning up to 35% less than their white counterparts.
Lack of Diversity
The lack of diversity in newsrooms has resulted in inaccurate and misguided portrayals of race and the black community in the news.
Lack of Mentorship
With a shift to more digital and self-guided storytelling, there are less opportunities for creatives, journalists and reporters to access training, resources and mentors.
